A Delicate Balance: Prevention and Management of Acute Ischemic Stroke
This course will cover the acute treatment and secondary stroke prevention of ischemic stroke. Stroke is a medical emergency, with a very short time window for acute intervention. We will discuss current acute treatment options with thrombolytics and mechanical thrombectomy, with a focus on recent clinical trials aimed to expand the available treatment options and timing. The second half of the course will focus on short- and long-term secondary prevention following ischemic stroke, emphasizing recent updates in standards of care.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the treatment options for acute ischemic stroke
- List the factors that determine whether a patient is a candidate for acute thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy
- Recognize five causes of ischemic stroke
- Summarize recommendations for short-term and long-term secondary stroke prevention
