Two Thirds of a Triad: The Psychosocial in the Biopsychosocial Model of Pain

It is estimated that over 20% of the United States population has chronic pain at a cost of over $500 billion per year. Worldwide, the prevalence of pain has been estimated to be as high as 27.5%, though the exact rate varies across countries. The biopsychosocial framework has emerged as the leading approach to manage this burgeoning issue, and the current presentation will review the psychosocial components of this model.

  • Identify a frequent association between severe symptomatic secondary fibromyalgia (SFIB) and its primary disease "post-traumatic stress disorder" (PTSD)
  • Effectively treat the SFIB and monitor its need for medicinal adjustment
  • Assist in the gradual evolution towards normalized behavior in the PTSD patient
