The Sum of Its Parts: the Concept of Total Pain
Pain is so much more than a physical experience. Pain brings anxiety, worry, depression, fear, and potentially spiritual distress. Pain, when untreated, affects a person’s ability to live the life they want to live. Pain comes from the brain and cannot be treated appropriately without considering all parts of the person in pain. Dame Cicely Saunders coined the phrase “total pain” to define the interaction between all the components of pain. The aim of this session is to describe this interaction between the psychosocial, spiritual, and physical aspects of pain and develop a treatment plan that encompasses it all.
