Chronic pain is frequently tied to chronic psychiatric conditions. Both cause cyclic decompensation if untreated. During this presentation, the “AMPS” approach to psychiatric screening and diagnosis will be discussed, and learners will understand the importance of screening for anxiety, mood, psychotic and substance misuse disorders. Diagnostic pearls will help direct treatment for these somewhat complex clinical disorders. A review of cognitive behavioral therapy and medication management will also be discussed along with the interplay between common psychiatric conditions and chronic pain. We will review how best to most effectively determine if a patient has comorbid psychopathology and discuss strategies to address chronic pain and overuse of opioids.
