LGBTQ Disparities in Pain Care

This symposium will be presented by clinical specialists dedicated to treating pain and/or mental health conditions for the LGBTQ patient population. Presenters include a pain psychologist/bioethicist, an interventional anesthesiologist, and a clinical pharmacy specialist. Presented will be current data regarding LGBTQ disparities in pain care, addressing challenges of interventional pain medicine in the transgender population, particularly relating to structural changes in patients’ bodies as they transition, and pain disparities for the transgender population in the United States and among U.S Veterans. Experiences of treating patients with chronic pain individually and combined with mental health conditions will also be discussed, including overcoming unique disparities among the transgender patients served in a dedicated primary care clinic at the Salt Lake City VA Medical Center.
