Hugs vs Drugs: Debating the 2022 CDC Opioid Prescribing Guidelines

The far-reaching consequences of the 2016 CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain were numerous. The guideline affected patient equity and access, but also payers, regulatory standards, and, in effect, redefined the standard of care. In 2022, the CDC created a new draft of the guideline in recognition of the previous guidelines’ shortcomings and unintended consequences. But has the guideline actually improved? In this presentation a pharmacist and a physician debate the new 2022 guideline and discuss the future implications for patients and providers.
