Healers or Drug Dealers? Do We Prescribe Opioids Too Much or Not Enough? A Debate Between Palliative Care and Interventional Pain Specialists

We can all agree that chronic pain treatment is INCREDIBLY challenging. We can also agree that opioids are not a side-effect free panacea. Despite all we have learned over the past 25 years, are we any better at treating chronic pain?!?!?!? New guidelines, laws, training, and practice patterns have severely restricted opioid prescribing. But, despite that, overdose deaths are at an all-time high. Patients are both suffering and unsatisfied. During this debate, a palliative care specialist and an interventional pain specialist will debate whether we have over restricted opioid prescribing or…. Is it possible…. that we have not restricted it enough?
