Getting Under Your Skin: OTC and Rx Topical Formulations for Pain

Irritated with the confusing array of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription (Rx) creams, patches, gels and sprays? Don’t let topical analgesics rub you the wrong way! In this session, we will discuss the anatomy of the skin and why formulation matters for efficacy (and toxicity) of topical analgesics. The characteristics and clinical use of OTC and Rx topical analgesics will be explored in this session, including available clinical data and guideline recommendations. By the end of this session, you will have a greater appreciation for the role, efficacy, and limitations of topical counterirritants, NSAIDS, anesthetics, capsaicin, natural products, and more.
