Best Practices for Identifying Chronic Pain Patients for Interventional Procedures On-Demand Location: Nolita

Chronic pain has emerged in the past decade as a top health concern, leading to direct morbidity and mortality of over 20% of Americans and individuals worldwide. Chronic pain is the primary cause of disability in our country, contributing indirectly to lost wages and productivity. Pain medicine is a relatively new field conceived out of unmet needs to help those who suffer from chronic pain. The art of treating chronic pain requires practitioners to address both the sensory and emotional aspects of pain. The recent development of formal pain medicine training programs has promoted the application of a multidisciplinary approach to treating chronic pain conditions. Over the last decade, our treatment paradigm for chronic pain has drastically shifted from opioid-based medications to nonopioid-based treatments and interventions. This presentation will review common chronic pain conditions and introduce various interventional pain management treatment options with supporting evidence. There will be a brief review of a focused pain examination, description of pertinent imaging and diagnostic modalities, an overview of the various interventional treatment options, and a discussion of when to refer to a specialist for these interventions. The target audience will include all healthcare professionals who are involved in treating chronic pain patients with a special emphasis for those who practice primary care medicine and noninterventional pain management.
