Walking on Spikes or Clouds? Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathic Pain Treatment Options
Pain associated with Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy is a highly prevalent condition that can be very disabling and difficult to manage. Proven effective treatments only help some patients with the condition and management recommendations have significantly evolved over the last 20 years based on newer available agents and ever-evolving medical evidence showing efficacy of some agents and lack of efficacy of others, challenging traditional paradigms. State-of-the-art assessment (including demonstration of key aspects of the physical exam) and important associated comorbidities will be discussed. The evolution of several clinical practice guidelines and its medical evidence will be presented for various pharmacotherapy options. Non-pharmacological options, including newer and emerging minimally-invasive treatment options will also be discussed. Finally, practical management algorithms, including mechanistic approaches, will be appraised based on various factors such as medical comorbidities, cost, and patient response. This session is sponsored by an educational grant from Averitas Pharma, Inc.
