According to the Center for Disease Control, in 2021 there were around 3.66 million births that occurred in the United States alone. As you can imagine even just a small percentage of pregnant people experiencing acute pain postpartum is significant. In this course, two clinical pharmacist specialists in pain management and a board certified addiction medicine physician, will dive into the clinical considerations and evidence based therapeutic strategies for treating acute pain in postpartum patients, including pelvic pain, with an emphasis on those that are breastfeeding. Pharmacologic approaches will be discussed via a series of complex clinical patient cases presented throughout the course. This course will help multidisciplinary team members recognize the importance of appropriately treating pain in postpartum patients who elect to breastfeed and learn to select pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches that are considered safe and effective in this population.
