Chronic pain has emerged in the past decade as a major health concern leading to direct morbidity and mortality of over 20% of Americans and individuals worldwide. As the leading cause of disability in our country, chronic pain contributes indirectly to lost wages and productivity. Interventional pain medicine is a relatively new field conceived out of unmet needs to help those who suffer from chronic pain. This specialty has rapidly come into the limelight due to the devastating impact of the prescription opioid epidemic. Like with any therapy, clinicians must identify a problem by narrowing down the diagnosis with a thorough work up and then offer a treatment based on evidence. This presentation will focus on several common chronic pain conditions and the interventional treatment options, with supporting evidence, that can be utilized as an alternative to medication management. The target audience will include all healthcare professionals who are involved in treating chronic pain patients with a special emphasis for those who practice primary care medicine and noninterventional pain management.
