Complicated By: Using Comorbidities to Select Treatment Options

Patients with chronic pain commonly have comorbid conditions. You may have a patient with an existing comorbidity at baseline or perhaps one of your chronic patients develops a comorbidity overnight (think heart attack or acute kidney injury). Regardless, these comorbid conditions often guide a practitioner towards a particular treatment or remove a treatment option from consideration. This session will review widespread comorbidities that affect patients with chronic pain and how they might impact the treatment plan. We will explain the pharmacokinetic changes that occur in renal and hepatic dysfunction and discuss pharmacologic considerations for renal dysfunction, hepatic dysfunction, pulmonary conditions, cardiac conditions, and psychiatric conditions including potential medication contraindications.

  • Discuss pharmacologic considerations for renal dysfunction, hepatic dysfunction, pulmonary conditions, cardiac conditions, and psychiatric conditions including potential medication contraindications
